In the distance, I saw a pair of Mergansers, recognizable by their long, low outline.

Through the camera, I realized these sleek, bad-hair-day birds were new to me, and later discovered they were Red-breasted Mergansers. (Not Common, as I'd thought.)

The Red-breasted Merganser winters along the coasts of North America, migrates across the interior, and breeds in summer in the north.

Apparently, they like salt water, but this pair seemed happy in our local man-made Wascana Lake.
